Your Guide to the EHIC

Everything you need to know to get your European Health Insurance Card in Spain.

Key Information
Understand the basics of the European Health Insurance Card.

What is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE) in Spanish, is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

What does it cover?

The EHIC covers any medical treatment that becomes necessary during your stay, such as illness or an accident. It also covers treatment for pre-existing medical conditions and routine maternity care, as long as you have not travelled specifically to give birth.

Treatment is provided under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as for people insured in that country.

What is not covered?

The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare, costs such as a return flight to your home country, or lost/stolen property. It is also not valid if you are moving to another country to live there permanently.

Who can apply for it in Spain?

Anyone who is covered by the Spanish Social Security system (Seguridad Social) has the right to apply for the EHIC. This includes workers, pensioners, and their registered beneficiaries.

How do I use it?

If you need medical care, present your EHIC to the public healthcare provider (e.g., a doctor, hospital, or pharmacy). They will know how to process your treatment.

Validity and Renewal

In Spain, the EHIC is usually valid for 2 years. The expiration date is printed on the card itself. It is your responsibility to renew it before it expires if you plan to travel.

The renewal process is the same as the initial application. It is recommended to start the process a few weeks before your card expires to ensure you receive the new one in time.
